Nothing can compare to the moment a parent sees their newborn child for the very first time.
Up until now, I never even realized how greatly we take special moments like this one for granted. I can't even imagine how it must feel for someone blind to not see the miracle they've created.
For legally blind woman and new mother Kathy Bietz, this was a harsh reality. The 29-year-old Ontario, Canada woman was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a genetic eye disorder that causes gradual loss of vision, when she was only 11 years old. Although she has some peripheral vision, for most of Bietz's life, she's been literally in the dark.
There wasn't much hope for Bietz, until her son Aksel was born and she was introduced to a life-altering device that changed everything. Wearing eSight glasses, which records video of the image in front of a person and magnifies it onto a high-definition screen, Beitz was able to see her newborn son — and her husband, too.
Through a new campaign centered on Beitz's story, the eSight company is aiming to "Make Blindness History." With nearly 285 million visually impaired people around the world, this little glimmer of hope is a great place to start.
