Watch Lauren Bacall Sing In Her Film Debut In ‘To Have And Have Not’

Someone once said to me that "everyone in old movies is beautiful." It's a simple statement, but it's something I think about often. Is it the wash of nostalgia that makes them beautiful, or was everyone in old movies actually just heaven-sent?

Lauran Bacall made her film debut in the 1944 film To Have And Have Not alongside none other than the great Humphrey Bogart. She is the very essence of classic beauty, so it makes sense that her career started with modeling. She's got the kind of look that's totally intimidating, enchanting, radiant, effortless, and sultry all at the same time. If she never made the transition into film, however, it would have been such a shame, because her deep voice became one of her most identifying traits. She's now recognized as one of the great film actresses of her time.

In this scene, Humphrey Bogart's character, Harry Morgan, meets Bacall's character for the first time. She's an American, affectionately called "Slim," drifting through the ever-changing landscape of 1940's Europe. When she steps up to sing a song with the piano player, Cricket, Harry Morgan can hardly keep his cigarette from falling right off of his lips. When you see the way she looks at him and hear the way she sings that song… you'll understand why.
