Discrimination is a terrible thing. No matter what it's based on — race, gender, orientation, religion, the list goes on — it's pretty awful to single people out simply for their differences.
But it's not just humans who have to deal with discrimination. Dogs, too, must deal with prejudice every day — and often, the challenges they face end in death. Every year, it's estimated that 1.2 million innocent dogs are euthanized, often based on factors as silly as their breed or background.
However, thanks to the hard work of rescue groups, more and more amazing dogs are being saved every day — like Libby, the incredible dog you're about to meet.
Though once slated for death after three long years in an animal shelter, Libby has overcome all the odds. Now, as Huffington Post reports, she's working hard not just for her community, but for rescue dogs around the world.

When she was just a little puppy, a pit bull named Libby found herself in a Texas animal shelter. Despite being sweet, sociable, and happy, little Libby would remain behind these bars for three years. She would watch as families came and went, always interested in adopting a new furry friend, but always overlooking her — until one sad day, Libby's name was added to the shelter's euthanasia list. This sweet dog's young life would soon be ended.

But when a rescue group called Operation Pets Alive heard about Libby, they knew the unwanted pup had a higher calling. The characteristics that made her undesirable to families — high energy, speed, and intense curiosity — were perfect for a K9 training program. Operation Pets Alive began filming Libby to exhibit all her wonderful qualities.

They sent the footage to UniversalK9, a dog training center in San Antonio, TX — and to their delight, Libby was accepted into the program! Though they were sad to see her go, the good people at Operation Pets Alive were thrilled for Libby's new opportunity.
Off Libby went for training. Through her program at UniversalK9, she would train to become a narcotics detection K9 with the police force. She worked hard and excelled, greatly impressing her trainers and handlers.

UniversalK9 filmed Libby's training progress. Here, she demonstrates her first stages of detection training.
Finally, her extensive training was over, and Libby was ready. After graduating from her program, she was off to the Montgomery County K9 unit to become an official narcotics detector.

Libby's partner? Deputy Jesse Bullinger. As her handlers at UniversalK9 told Huffington Post, it was a "match made in heaven."

Almost instantly, Libby was a hero. Right out of the gate, this police pup began busting criminals and shutting down drug rings. Here, Libby is pictured next to the illegal paraphernalia she detected in an unlocked safe — just feet from a small child's bed! Thanks to Libby's great work, the homeowner was charged with four third-degree felonies.
Next, Libby assisted in the arrest of two drug users. When a needle filled with liquid methamphetamine was dropped in a busy gas station, Libby was there to ensure it was picked up before any innocent bystanders came in contact with it.

But Libby also got to accompany her partner to fun activities — such as a flag retirement ceremony on Memorial Day. Here, she sits and enjoys watching the happy crowds.

She also gets to visit children when her handlers stop by local elementary schools. She seems to enjoy the attention.

Everyone in the Montgomery County Constable's Office loves little Libby. They can't resist taking selfies with her when she visits.

Looking at her happy face, it's hard to believe this sweet girl ever came so close to death. Imagine if her life hadn't been saved...

Judging by all her hard work, this brave dog was clearly destined for great things! But Libby's good work doesn't just benefit her community; it benefits rescue dogs worldwide.

As one of Libby's longtime supporters, Debra Guajardo, told Huffington Post, "Every bust she makes, every gram of drugs she detects and clears from our streets and communities will reaffirm the incredible value of shelter dogs — including pit bulls — and the valuable contribution they can make when given the opportunity."
Thank you for all your good work, Libby. We're so grateful for your sacrifice and dedication. We here at LittleThings wish you all the happiness in the world!
