Luca Palmisano is what you would call a modern day miracle. From the day he was born, doctors had no faith in his survival.
In fact, after he was diagnosed with alveolar capillary dysplasia, a developmental disorder of the lungs, professionals told his mom that he had a 100% chance of dying. Seven months later, things took an unexpected turn.
In the video below, posted on April 13, 2017, Luca's mom, Ashley, explains that shortly after her son's birth, "He started turning this dusty color and started having some respiratory distress and we had the docs come in and check him out. He was swiftly taken to the NICU."
The registered nurse and her family learn that Luca couldn't breath and that he has alveolar capillary dysplasia, which is usually fatal within 30 days.
"Oh, God, it was just so devastating. 'Your son will die' is what they told me," Ashley recalls. Luca's doctors tell her his disease is 100% fatal. In fact, the odds of a baby having the disorder is one in 6 million. That's exactly what makes this little guy a miracle.
Soon, the recent passing of another infant at the hospital opened up a life-saving opportunity. Luca received a double lung transplant, and after a long recovery, the miracle baby can finally breathe the way he is supposed to.
Now, Luca is a happy, healthy 9-month-old with the cutest chubby cheeks. Despite his rough journey, he and his family are extremely grateful for what the future holds.
