Most little girls grow up knowing that they can always turn to the police in a time of need. But for Maggie Miller, 11, and Carly Monroe, 8, the roles were reversed last week when the pair decided to lend a little support to their local police department in Stockton, California following the death of one of the department's beloved K9s, a Dutch shepherd named Nitro. We've told you before about police dogs that are special to their communities, and this one really had us reaching for the tissues.
Maggie and Carly knew that the Stockton PD must be having a difficult time after losing one of their most loyal officers, so they decided to bring a batch of home-made cookies in to show the officers their sympathy. The bond between human and K9 officers is legendary, as we saw with this pup mourning his fallen partner. Eleven-year old Maggie put it best, saying, "I saw it on the news that Nitro died and it broke our hearts. Nitro always helped the police department, now it was our turn to help the police."
The girls' grandmother was the police chaplain of the Stanford Hospital for 12 years, and she now serves as the chaplain for the Stockton Police Department. Maggie and Carly knew firsthand how difficult it was for the entire department to lose a canine companion, and were overjoyed that their small act of kindness could briefly cheer up the department.

The two girls knew Nitro from his past bravery in the service of the police department; he made the news earlier this year after he survived a hammer attack while attempting to bring a man in for public intoxication.

The girls saw on the news that Nitro, a 3-year-old veteran of Stockton’s K9 unit, had died in the line of duty after an air-conditioning unit failed during a record-breaking heatwave.

When they heard that the heroic pup had passed away, their hearts went out to the Stockton police, and they decided to do their best to cheer them up. And it worked! "They smiled and laughed," noted Maggie. "It really made their day."
