Last year, then-three-year-old Mali Williams-Cody and her family went to Cleveland Centre in Middlesbrough, England to see Santa. Mali has speaking problems so she can’t talk very well, but she does know sign language.
And when Santa heard that, he immediately began signing to her.
The two formed a very special bond during their little chat, and Mali has waited all year to see Santa again. And now she’s finally gotten her chance.
Santa walks into the room with a big “ho ho,” and immediately recognizes Mali and her family. And Mali even gives him a present, a toy mouse, before he gives her one.
Mali hands him a tiny toy mouse and she proudly says the word out loud.
“Does he squeak,” Santa asks her.
“Yes,” she replies. Then Santa gestures to her in sign language followed by a big hug, and she can’t keep the grin off of her face.
When Mali turns around to go back to her mom, she doesn’t notice Santa take something from behind his back. But when she turns around, Santa is holding a huge Mickey Mouse, and it’s for her.
“A mouse and you just showed him your mouse,” Mali’s mom Suzanne says. “What do you say?”
“Thank you,” Mali says. And when Santa signs “Merry Christmas” to her, she does it right back.
Then it’s Mali’s brother’s turn to talk to Santa, and he also has a gift for him. He hands him pennies that he and Mali have collected to give away to a local hospital while he tells the big man what he wants for Christmas.
And Santa is so pleased with the both of them, he can’t help but give them a big hug to say thank you.
