When 17-year-old Malyk Bonnet saw a woman being beaten by her ex-boyfriend he did something most people wouldn't. Not only did he refuse to keep on walking, he refused to give up on her.
"The guy was screaming at her, the girl. He wasn't really gentle with her, and I started watching, because I thought he would hit her, so I approached them a little bit," Bonnet said.
The couple bizarrely asked him for money to take the bus. Malyk agreed and went to the convenience store to get money. When he was alone with the woman she confessed everything to him.
'The girl was saying, 'Please help me. He don't want to let me go. I want to go home but he don't want to let me go,'" he said. That's when Malyk began to form a plan.
"My plan was to keep them in a public place, where there's a lot of people. I decided to make myself friendly with the man, so he would trust me. So I played my game," he said.
He lead the pair to a local coffee place and gave the man $50 to buy food. He then said he was going to the bathroom. It was there that he called the police from the stall. What Malyk didn't know was that the police were already looking for the criminal.
"We were looking for a 29-year-old woman who was kidnapped by her former boyfriend earlier that day, and we believed that man was very dangerous," said Laval police Lt. Daniel Guérin.
The man had already been found guilty of assault and death threats by the courts a year ago. When the police arrived, the kidnapper didn't even realize Malyk was the one who called the cops!
"He was really surprised, he didn't know that it was me," said Bonnet. "So I played my game right." The woman was grateful. "She was almost crying. She was so happy, so happy not to be with him."
Heroes come in all forms, recently a homeless man rescued another woman who was being abused by an ex-boyfriend.
Police arrested the kidnapper and plan on nominating Malyk for a bravery award.
