Merrill and Taco are an unusual pair, but that doesn't bother them!
In 2014, the two dogs were surrendered to a shelter. When Rocket Dog Rescue in San Francisco had heard about the dogs, they immediately brought Merrill and Taco to their center to keep the best friends together while waiting for a family to adopt them.
The rescue center quickly learned that each of Merrill and Taco refused to do anything without their best friend and knew that they had to find a family who would take on both dogs.
On October 20, 2014, Rocket Dog Rescue posted a photo of Merrill and Taco that quickly spread across the internet. What made it so cute was that the dogs weren't just posing for the photo — Taco had wedged himself between Merrill's legs and was poking his little Chihuahua head over the pit bull mix's left knee.
The post accumulated thousands of shares and over 14,000 likes!

This is Taco, an 8-year-old Chihuahua, and Merrill, a 3-year-old pit bull mix. The two were dropped off together at a shelter in California in 2014.
They aren't just the best of friends, they won't go anywhere or do anything without the other!
Rocket Dog Rescue obtained the dogs to make sure they wouldn't be separated.
"We just could not stand the thought of them being separated or waiting at the shelter for months to find a home TOGETHER so they are coming to Rocket Dog Rescue!!!" Rocket Dog wrote along with this photo.
The dogs quickly took the internet by storm when they were snapped in the backseat of a car. Taco had poked his head on top of Merrill's leg and it made him look like he was sitting in a kangaroo's pouch.
The rescue center's post received 26,182 shares and over 1,000 comments. The good news was that all the shares meant Taco and Merrill were that much closer to finding their forever home.
The best friends look adorable sleeping together in their bed and prove that Rocket Dog Rescue did the right thing by keeping them together.
Of the hundreds of comments, dozens were from families volunteering to take the two home. The rescue center workers made sure to write on the website that the pair was still available for adoption.
This is the post Rocket Dog Rescue shared on its website about the now internet-famous duo.
Taco had almost lost his friend forever when Merrill was sick. But thankfully, a lifesaving operation went well.
The rescue center wrote:
These two love each other more than any bonded pair the shelter has ever seen. They cry when leave each other’s side. This dynamic duo has lost their family, their home, and now we can’t let them lose each other!
Once the Facebook post had circulated, it was just a decision of which family would be the best for Merrill and Taco. Luckily, they found the perfect match and Merrill and Taco moved to San Diego!
After living in a foster home with a woman named Jodi, Merrill and Taco were adopted in November 2014 and quickly adapted to their new home. While their owners remain unknown, they did start a Facebook page for the dogs knowing so many people were invested in their happiness!
"Merrill & Taco are doing wonderful in their forever home," Rocket Dog Rescue wrote with this photo. "They are enjoying hanging out by the fire snuggling up after a long, fun filled day."
One thing's for sure, no matter what Merrill and Taco are doing, it's guaranteed that they're doing it together!
Merrill may be part pit bull but that doesn't mean she's a dominant dog. In fact, she seems to always let Taco stand or sit on top of her — which is one reason these two gained so much popularity.
Merrill and Taco prove that size means nothing!
Merrill may be around four times bigger than her tiny companion but she loves her friend Taco more than anything.
When Taco fell ill, it was Merrill's turn to be there for her pint-sized friend. Then, with the right medication and lots of love from Merrill, Taco's health improved and the pair was back to their old ways.
Over the years, Merrill and Taco's bond has only grown. This unlikely pair has melted the hearts of thousands around the world and will definitely continue to be attached at the hip!
