Mike McConkey and his wife Shawn took an empty mountaintop lot in San Diego, California, and with the help of a few rusty shipping containers, they created the home of their dreams.
"The scrapes, the bumps, the bruises just show the history," Mike explains in the video below, posted on May 4, 2017. "We built this ourselves."
He rolls up a glass panel door to reveal the inside of his new home, which he and Shawn made by using two shipping containers left on the property and buying two more from Craigslist to add more space.
The couple stuck to low-cost and reclaimed materials, allowing them to completely transform the shipping containers into a $160,000 house.
The inside is dazzling. Mike gives a tour of their modern kitchen and other portions of the home he and his wife built from scratch.
"It took a few times where they'd come out for inspections, that they felt comfortable with what we were doing and then we had every building official in the county out here, at one point or another, because they just wanted to see 'the container house.'"
Mike and Shawn are proud of their creation and encourage other families to make their own housing transformations too.
