Minnie Riperton Hits All The Right Notes As She Performs 1974 Hit ‘Lovin’ You’

No matter how much time passes, there are so many love songs that simply never grow old. Whether it's an emotional ballad, like Dolly Parton's classic original version of "I Will Always Love You," or a bubblegum pop song about love at first sight, like the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You," you'll always find them playing on the radio at some point or another. Something about the romance and affection described in each one of our favorites remains engrained in pop culture forever.

In the early 1970s, this talented songstress was living a semi-retired life as a housewife in Florida when she got another chance at topping the charts. Minnie Riperton's second album, Perfect Angel, was met with middling success at first, but when America got their ears on this fourth single released from the record, it was clear it would become one of music history's most essential love songs. You might not recognize her face, unless you're seeing the similarities between her and her famous daughter, former Saturday Night Live actress Maya Rudolph, but as soon as you hear the first few notes of this dreamy tune it will all come back to you.

The melody was actually created as a way to soothe Rudolph as a baby when she would become fussy. You can even hear Riperton softly singing, "Maya, Maya, Maya, Maya…" as the song fades away at the very end. Of course, it's that impressive high note she reaches at the end of the "la la la la la" refrain that sticks in everyone's mind with this ditty.
