Tracey Blackmore of Carmel, Indiana, lost her son Brooks this past summer after a battle with cancer. Although she will forever grieve the loss of her 6-year-old son, she’s found the perfect way to honor her little boy and give back to her community.
Brooks was diagnosed with cancer in June 2015 after doctors discovered two stage-four brain tumors.
During his treatment, Brooks kept a positive attitude, his mom told local news station Fox 59, and even tried to name his tumors.
“He would always say ‘Go away Bob! Poopy Bob, you stink,’” she said.
Brooks also spent his days playing with Hot Wheels, which was the only thing that cheered him up.
“This kid would go to radiation, then go to chemo and come home hardly [able to] hold his head up. He would say, ‘Mom can we go to Target to get a hot wheel?’ So of course, I would pack him and go,” she said.
To honor her son, Tracey is hiding 200 Hot Wheels cars all over town in the month of December, Brooks’ birthday month, inside a bag with a note about her son, a copy of a painting he did while undergoing cancer treatments, and information about St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a childhood cancer research organization.
“It’s easy to sit around and be sad all the time, but the way I feel Brooks the most is through being happy, and joy, and helping others, and I feel him close to me,” she said. “It’s mostly about spreading the love.”
Brooks’ mom, who raised nearly $40,000 for childhood cancer research since his passing, is also asking anyone who finds a Hot Wheels car to write a story on Brooks’ Facebook page.
