Mom Makes ‘American Boy’ Doll For Son’s Birthday

When her son asked for a gift for his birthday she didn't think she could give, Gina DeMillo had to get creative.

6-year-old Miles saw his his sister get an American Girl doll who looked just like her, so he insisted on getting a doll that looked just like him too.

It was hard news for this mom to break to her son: American Girl doesn't make dolls that looked like him, or like any boy for that matter.

Gina's solution was genius: She decided to give a doll a make-under.

She found an doll who slightly resembled her son – a blue-eyed and blond-haired doll. She cut its hair short, then, using a q-tip, removed its makeup with acetone. For new doll clothing, she turned to Etsy, where she found clothes for her son's new toy, including a Spiderman t-shirt!

Like many parents, Gina doesn't believe in gender-specific toys. Her efforts in procuring a doll for her son come after a dad got his son an Elsa costume and this dad's response to criticism after he bought his son a Little Mermaid doll, and are making just as many waves!

"My kids notice when we go into stores that there's pink aisles and blue aisles, but one thing that they've always said  and that I've always really encouraged  is that there's no such thing as a boy's toy and a girl's toy they're just toys," says the mom.

Mom says that Miles is ecstatic about his new toy. We love that he can now play with a toy he truly loves, all thanks to her ingenuity!
