Movie Etiquette Posters From The 1910s Reflect Vastly Different Times

When it comes to movie theatre etiquette, we all know the basics: Don't attend if you're suffering from a cough, arrive on-time (so you aren't wandering through the aisles during previews), and keep your opinion to yourself until the end of the movie.

Perhaps most importantly: Turn you phone off, and don't text people during the movie! This seems to be the golden rule that some people tend to forget.

But in the film era of the 1910s, movie-goers faced different challenges than we face today. First off, cell phones did not exist, meaning that there were no handheld interruptions to content with at the movie theatre.

Also, films were silent, so some hushed talking and commentary was considered totally kosher – though loud whistling was deemed rude.

However, most movie etiquette posters of the era focused on an element of womens' wardrobes that we often forget in the modern world.

Some posters focused on applause over whistling. Back in the day, loud whistling with fingers in your mouth was all the rage.

Here's another poster that prohibits loud talking and whistling. These days talking is frowned upon in the movie theatre, but this was during the silent film era so some talking was alright.

Most vintage movie etiquette posters focus on hats.

Apparently, stylish and enormous hats presented quite a big problem for movie-goers – especially if you were seated behind a woman wearing a particularly grandiose hat!

It's pretty funny that this was such a huge (no pun intended) problem that there were posters created about it.
