Bob Dylan may be one of the most talented and well-loved musicians of our time. His songs have been sung by different generations — I myself am a fan, as are my parents! Even Johnny Cash and June Carter loved his music so much that they sang "It Ain't Me Babe" together!
While music magazines and fanatics alike are reviewing his newest album release, Bob Dylan The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, I prefer to go back in time and appreciate Dylan for what he truly is: an amazing, charismatic, and gifted performer.
In 1964, he performed "Mr. Tambourine Man" at the Newport Folk Festival. At this time, his popularity was increasing as a political songwriter — a movement he distanced himself from in 1965.
The song itself was revolutionary for music, as it introduced the folk rock subgenre. Many have speculated what the lyrics mean: many have religious interpretations of them, while others believe that the song is a call to the singer's muse. In any case, the interpretations vary widely, but apparently have no effect on the power of the song and how you choose to enjoy it.
Bob Dylan is truly a music powerhouse, made even more apparent in his latest album and anthology, compiling outtakes, rehearsal tracks, and alternate version of his songs.
