Neighbor Offers School Rides For Mom Who Walks Her Son Every Day

According to Nebraska state law, a bus can't pick up a student unless they live four miles from school. Kimberly and her son Gabe live 1.6 miles away from his elementary school. Without a bus ride, Kimberly was stuck. She's stay-at-home mom and full-time student who can't afford her own car or a taxi service. But she refused to let her second-grader walk to and from school by himself. So, Kimberly and Gabe walked 45 minutes a day to school, then took the same route home.

The trek began to take a physical and emotional toll on mother and son, especially as they mentally prepared for the harsh winter weather. After her desperate attempts to get help from the administration, KMTV picked up Kimberly's story. Less than two weeks after her news segment aired, something incredible happened.

A neighbor was in her car when she saw a mother and son walking down the sidewalk. Becky recognized Kimberly and Gabe from that very news segment, pulled over, and offered to drive them home. From that day on, Becky has driven Gabe to and from school. She also has a child who goes to Gabe's school, and the two have become fast friends. "I’m a stay-at-home mom. I have three kids. If I was in the same situation, I think I want someone to help me,” Becky told KMTV. “It's small town. You're there for everybody."

Kimberly couldn't be more grateful. And now that he doesn't have to walk so much, Gabe has a newfound sense of energy. In turn, he's fostered new friendships and has joined after-school activities. It's all thanks to one amazing person: another selfless mom.
