Officers from the Washington Township Police Department in Washington, NJ, went above and beyond for a mother of three whose car was in need of serious repair.
A group of officers saw Kristal Christ driving the beaten-up car around town on several occasions. Instead of giving her a ticket, they decided to lend a helping hand, similarly to the cops in Cleveland who bought a bike for a teen in need.
"Officers located her residence and got her vehicle information from her. They then reached out to local businesses for help. Port Murray Auto Salvage donated a replacement passenger door and STS Car Service Center of Washington donated a new tire to the cause. Stew’s Auto Body of Washington, along with help from the police officers, installed the door and tire. Officers also bought a $100 gift card to help the mother and Santa with presents for her children," the police department explained on its Facebook page.
The police department also included photos of the damage along with a cheerful group shot. See them below!
"We noticed the vehicle a lot around town, more when we were off duty than on duty so we never really had an opportunity to stop her and figure out what’s wrong with the car," patrolman Kyle Hayes told Fox News.
The damage was serious: Kristal Christ's door was tied shut with a rope and a tire needed to be replaced.
Patrolman Hayes eventually met Christ and her children one day when their car needed to be towed. That's when he felt inclined to help.
“The main thing was make sure the kids are safe,” he said. “Once I knew that there was kids in the car, we saw the door, we were like, ‘Let’s get this done.’ ”
In turn, the officers helped her get a new door, new tires, and also gave her a $100 gift card.
The gesture meant the world to Christ, who was having "anxiety" over fixing the car.
"They've reached out to help the community," she told the news station. "They set a good example for children. I have the three kids and for them to see what the officers have done for me, that means a lot. I can't thank them enough for what they did… It uplifted me."
