African Greys are some of the most intelligent and best talkers of any parrot, and a multi-cultural bird named Nigel might be the most interesting of all.
Years ago, Nigel was a "British" bird. He picked up the accent from his owner, Darren Chick of the UK, who adopted him at a young age and moved with him to California. However, Nigel disappeared from Chick's Torrance, CA home over four years ago and Chick had just about given up hope that he'd ever see his beloved parrot again.
You can imagine the shock when a local vet called Chick saying she had been brought Nigel and found the microchip with Chick's information. Chick was thrilled to reunite with his feathered friend, who he instantly recognized, but the four years away had changed Nigel. The African Grey's British accent was replaced with a Spanish one! He had picked up the tongue while living with another family in the area and was muttering Spanish phrases and spoke of a man named Larry.
Hilarious! If only Nigel knew enough English – or Spanish – to tell his entire story!
