Shannon knew her tongue looked odd for quite a while, but it wasn't until she was watching television that she decided to do something about it.
The mother was watching a segment on The Doctors about oral health. She went to talk to her dentist about strange lesions on her tongue, but was instead given the run-around.
Her dentist referred her to an ear, nose, and throat specialist, who became deeply concerned. After doctors gave Shannon a biopsy, it was revealed that the infection was really stage-four oral cancer.
Doctors said that if she had waited even just two weeks longer, she would have been dead. Still, her recovery was a struggle. Shannon underwent 53 radiation treatments, losing over 100 pounds due to the stress on her body. On top of that, doctors weren't sure she would be able to talk.
Fortunately, with a devoted husband and daughter at her side, the mother was able to maintain a positive attitude. Today, Shannon is alive and healthy, and can even speak. She credits the TV show's segment with changing her life.
Shannon is now encouraging others to be more forthcoming with their dentists and to never wait when they feel something is wrong. Time wasn't on her side, but her swift action saved her.
