Sweet Orphan Elk Tries To Befriend Firefighters At Work In The Woods

Some wild animals in the woods can be a little unfriendly, especially if they think that people are trespassing in their space.

But others are surprisingly social and want to check out what you're doing in the wild as much as you want to with them.

Animals are just like us and just want to feel like they have a home, a pack, or a family to travel with. That way, even if they are facing abuse or abandonment, they at least have an ally by their side like these blind cat brothers.

Unfortunately, poor Buttons the elk was displaced from her family and has become a common sight in Kittitas County, Washington, where she roams with cows and goats.

Some may think that the abandonment and solidarity would make Buttons mean and aggressive. But the county's team of firefighters saw her amazing true colors while they were fighting a wild fire in the woods.

Check out their photos below of the abandoned Buttons and her surprisingly bubbly personality.

Several Kittitas County firefighters were busy fighting a wildfire in the woods when they happened upon an elk.

It turned out to be Buttons, the orphaned elk who had become a bit of a fixture in the community.

Having been abandoned, Buttons has begun to take up with a makeshift foster family of cows and goats on a hillside.

Though there are other elk herds in the area, Buttons has shown no interest in joining.

She instead prefers to wander around with her cow friends and visit nearby ranches.

In line with her decidedly un-elklike characteristics, the little local celebrity was ecstatic when she saw the firefighters and walked right up to check them out.

She even gave them friendly nuzzles with her nose as they snapped photos of her.

The group was so enchanted with Buttons and her friendly photo stealing that they posted the pictures on their Facebook page, much to the delight of the county.

They also hoped that showing her off to the county would prevent any prospective game hunters from shooting at her if they saw her in the woods.

Though most elk would likely be long gone before you had the chance to touch them, Buttons' niceness and nuzzling show that she just wants to have friends to play with, like we do!
