It's said that black cats bring all the bad luck, but at Rhode Island's Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, it's the white and tortoiseshell-colored kitty that you have to watch out for.
A mysterious cat named Oscar is the one visitor the elderly patients NEVER want stopping by their room. For the most part this cat, who wandered into the hospice center as a kitten and was taken in by the staff, is pretty shy. However, the center's staff began to notice a very creepy pattern early on with the unusual rescued cat. He would only pay visits to folks right before their death. He is said to wander the building stopping by shortly before a patient's health fails and his unique sixth sense is so spot on, that the staff now depend on his predictions to take precautions.
Dr. David Dosa is a geriatrician at the center and a professor at Brown University who has done extensive research on Oscar and his eerie predictions. Dosa says it could be the patients' lack of movement or that the feline smells ketones, the biochemicals released by dying cells. Although Oscar isn't always the first one on the scene, he makes an appearance every single time. In 2010, Dosa said the cat had correctly predicted over 50 deaths at the facility.
Dosa has even written a book about Oscar's bizarre ability. The death-detecting cat's story is a truly intriguing one, yet it lacks scientific explanation. For now, people just have to accept the mystery and watch his every move.
