Oscar David Serrano was living the dream as a Delta Airlines flight attendant. Then one day, he was diagnosed with stage 5 kidney disease, forcing him to leave his job so he could endure 12 hours of dialysis every night.
The man from Atlanta, Georgia, knew that a donation from a hospital waiting list would take time and lots of effort, but he didn't have a minute to spare.
He decided to be proactive and find his own kidney, creating a special flyer that would later turn out to be a lifesaving tool.
In the video below, posted on February 7, 2017, Oscar says he put his flyers up in "the park, restaurants, strip malls, up and down Buford Highway, up and down Roswell Road."
The 53-year-old says he spent his time away from dialysis putting up his posters and creating a Facebook page in order to find a donor. Then, after reading about his hardship, a complete stranger named Kimberly Rynders offered up her kidney and changed his life.
"Kimberley Rynders gave me my life back," he said. "We need more people to really look into organ donation. We have 5,034 people here in the state of Georgia right now waiting for a kidney."
Even after finding his own kidney, Oscar is still searching for donors — but this time, for other people in need.
He is fighting to get laws passed to make it easier for people to donate their organs to others, which would ultimately save countless lives.
"My kidney disease has really shown me what life is," Oscar says, reminding those who are in need of organ transplants to "put signs on your car, put signs all over town, tell your friends, get on social media. There is somebody out there that's willing to help you, but they're not looking for you. You have to be looking for them."
