Owen Sambol was hurrying home from school, when he heard something out of the ordinary. There was a faint voice calling him from a nearby place. Once he realized that the frail voice was trying to cry for help, he bolted straight toward it.
In the video below, posted on February 13, 2017, Owen explains, "He said, 'Help me!' when he saw me. I ran over!"
As shown, Owen dashes to the back of the house, where he believes the voice is coming from. There, he sees something shocking.
"I saw somebody laying at the bottom of the steps," the fourth grader says.
A man is lying down at the bottom of some wooden steps, freezing in the harsh, cold conditions of that day's weather. He is face down in the snow, freezing.
"I tried to help him up. It was all snowy. I ran around back to get my mom and dad, and that's when they called the paramedics," Owen explains.
Owens' mom, Ashley Sambol, is a firefighter, and when she hears her son's story, she immediately dials 911. She is worried he is suffering from hypothermia and brings the frozen man inside her house to warm up.
Ashley states, "I'm very proud of him. He was so cold, you know? A couple more minutes, you know, and we might not have him."
Had Owen not heard his neighbor's cry for help, who knows what would have happened. Thankfully, after Owen's quick thinking and his parents' immediate actions, their neighbor will live on.
