Our pets are generally pretty good at expressing that something we’re doing is annoying them — especially cats. If you’re doing something they don’t like, they will let you know.
A good example is this cat who uses body language to tell his owner he doesn’t want to be touched, thanks. But apparently he’s not the only one.
Jackson Galaxy is a vlogger and cat enthusiast who makes frequent appearances on his YouTube channel to debunk cat myths and help us dimwitted humans understand the complex behaviors of our four-legged friends. In one of his videos, he addresses one of the many annoyances of our kitties: excessive petting.
It’s so hard to refrain from wanting to smother our cats with affection and incessant coddling, but Galaxy says that stroking them beyond what they are comfortable with, however good our intentions, stresses them out. (And rightly so!)
Instead, he suggests holding out a finger and letting the cat guide you to where he or she would like to be pet — in essence, let the cat pet you. Super useful information for any cat lover or pet owner!
