North Korea’s Pyongyang Metro Escalator Creates A Dizzying Optical Illusion

While we'd always like to think "seeing is believing," the world loves to throw curveballs at us now and then. While nature is capable of confusing us all on its own, our fellow humans also like to go out of their way to go above and beyond with some truly peculiar creations. As frustrating as it can be, we also can't seem to look away when we see things like the mind-bending sculpture created by Anthony Howe.

That's not even mentioning the performers who train themselves to manipulate their audience's eyes with their impressive slight of hand. and watching a talented mime like Les Bubb will almost make you believe magic is real! What really stuns me, though, are moments when you observe something completely ordinary suddenly appear totally extraordinary.

When Elliot, the passionate explorer behind Earth Nutshell, took a visit to Pyongyang, North Korea, he captured a completely normal moment at the local metro that residents experience every single day without a second thought. However, when he filmed it from his unique perspective, he discovered something baffling about the commute.

By ever-so-slightly shifting his lens, it becomes almost impossible to tell which side of the escalator is going up and which is going down. I'll be honest, I stared at the clip a lot longer than I should admit before figuring it out.

Spoiler alert: I eventually realized the trick is looking at the treads of the stairs, but it took me two or three viewings.

Take a look below to see how long it takes you to puzzle it out.
