When a 4-year-old boy learned his beloved dog had gone missing, he sprung into action. Unfortunately, his heroism turned into a terrifying ordeal.
The dog, Odie, fell in a 23-foot-deep hole, and when the little boy tried to save him, he accidentally slipped in himself. Gabe's mother, Lindy Allbritton, tried to pull the little boy out, but almost fell in herself as well.
She immediately called rescue crews to help save Gabe and Odie. More than a dozen firefighters and good Samaritans came together to help hoist the boy up out of the hole, which was about a foot-and-a-half wide.
The boy spent about four hours in the hole before crews were finally able to get him out.
"When we got him to the top of the hole and were able to get our hands on him, we were ecstatic," Capt. Chris Reid, of Hog Chain Volunteer Fire Department told USA Today. "Relief came over us, and the Lord blessed us and blessed him. Having kids, that was on my mind the whole time, 'what if it was my kids?' That’s the effort we put into it."
Cheers erupted as the boy was pulled up. The dog was lifted out immediately after. Gabe was taken to a hospital and was released with minimal bruises. He was seen playing with Odie the following day.
