When we're feeling under the weather, it's only natural to want someone nearby to take care of us. As kids, we can rely on our parents to comfort us while we wait for the ickiness to pass.
Once we become adults, however, we often find ourselves on our own when busy schedules or long distances get in the way of having family around to help us. It can be heartbreaking to know your loved one is in need without the ability to provide for them, but organizations like the one featured below make life much easier for both sides.
The program is called Road to Recovery and it recruits volunteers to donate their time and vehicles to help cancer patients make it to their treatment appointments. Bay County, FL, resident Mary Royce has counted on the incredibly kind offer while battling her diagnosis.
The program's coordinator, retired nurse Ann Bruce, is happy to open her car doors to Royce on a daily basis, whisking her to and from doctors' offices five days a week.
She not only provides the elderly woman with a ride, though — Bruce also adds a healthy helping of sympathy and friendship to each trip. Royce explains in the video how their conversations distract her from the destination and boost her spirits throughout the arduous ordeal.
The program is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and you can likely find similar assistance in your neck of the woods.
