Ryan and Amber Suffern are twins. Like most twins, they are incredibly close and protective of one another. Ryan understands that his sister is a little bit different than the other kids at school.
Amber has autism and anxiety disorder, which made her a target of bullies, who called her fat, ugly, and disgusting. Ryan hates to see his sister suffer. In fact, Amber revealed to her mother, Karen Suffern, that she "wanted to die."
In 2013, the single mother was struggling to make ends meet. She advised her two children to write early letters to Santa, so she'd have more time to shop. When she saw Ryan's, she was brought to tears. The 8-year-old said he would trade everything he wanted if it meant his sister could get what she wanted and would stop being bullied. He even said that he would rather be bullied than her.
In the letter, he asked Santa if he could give Amber the ultimate surprise: a visit from her favorite band, Big Time Rush. Ryan's touching letter went viral and the caring brother got his twin sister exactly what she wanted.
The band surprised the twins (and we can't help but think her bullies were eating crow when they saw that). But that wasn't the end. It's been three years since Ryan's letter went viral. Since then, WTVD reports that Amber is no longer bullied.
With all the support her brother garnered, the Suffern family took the necessary steps to eliminate bullying from her life. Amber switched schools and became an anti-bullying advocate, and Karen wrote a book about her daughter's journey.
They say success is the best revenge, and judging by Amber and Ryan's journey, these twins are the epitome of perseverance.
"Words do hurt, they really do, because even with physical violence eventually, bruises, they heal, broken bones heal, but words you know they do a lot of damage," Karen tells WTVD.
