When it comes to children, most parents will say their two main concerns are their child's health and happiness. The sad truth is that sometimes neither of these things are controllable, or easily remedied.
When Eliza Oneill's parents made the video Saving Eliza, they did it because they had no where else to turn but to the love and support of what would turn out to be hundreds of thousands of strangers on the internet, all who would contribute anything that they could to find a cure for their now five year old daughter, Eliza.
Eliza's family have now raised almost $2 million on their GoFundMe page, all in less than two years, to help find a cure for their daughter's rare and terminal condition called Sanfilippo syndrome, a metabolic disorder that can affect everything from sleep, to speech, and even movement. While Eliza's family continues to raise funds for experimental treatments, their video alone has already helped to possibly save the life of another.
After seeing the Saving Eliza video, another family was able to recognize the condition in their four-year-old son, Will. Although doctors initially told the Byers' family that Will was on the autism spectrum, their fears that something even worse was affecting their son, came to reality after seeing Eliza.
The two families are now working for the same cause; to find a treatment or a cure that can help children with the same condition. And although the Byers' admit that hearing the news for the first time was devastating, they now hope to help other families learn and test for the condition early on, so that action can be taken to save the precious lives of those affected.
Please SHARE this story, and help save Eliza, Will, and other children affected by Sanfilippo's.
