Vets Give Mangy, Neglected Puppy A Life-Changing Makeover

Few rescue stories capture our hearts quite like those of Vet Ranch, a recent YouTube series about the rehabilitation of neglected but otherwise perfectly adoptable pets.

Supervising veterinarian of Vet Ranch Dr. Matt introduces viewers to Scrappy, a sweet albeit mangy pup whose skin is covered by demodectic mange. According to PetMD, demodex is characterized by an infestation of a dog's follicles by small mites. In many cases, they report, "most dogs do not acquire another infestation; the dog’s immune defenses are primed to eliminate any new demodex mites." Scrappy's condition was also characterized by a secondary skin infection with visible blisters. Before being taken in by the vet, he had been scheduled to be euthanized.

In just 17 days, Dr. Matt shows that Scrappy's fur had grown back and his scabs had diminished substantially. Additionally, he adds that neither of the conditions Scrappy had were contagious to humans. The problem is actually the number of otherwise healthy pets that need homes, he says, and dogs like Scrappy generally get the last pick by homes looking to adopt.

By the end of the video, Scrappy looked like any perfectly healthy, happy pup waiting to be paired with his forever home. If you'd like to learn more about Vet Ranch and animals like Scrappy, head over to their website.
