It's not every day that you hear a veteran calling someone else a hero, but that's exactly how 12-year U.S. Army veteran Nicholas Bailey is praising an 8-year-old girl.
Bailey never thought anyone would ever "show any interest" in the Army veteran and his service dog, Abel, until he met 8-year-old Rachel Mennett. After serving two tours in Iraq, Bailey, who suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, got himself a service dog to help him cope with his terrors and trouble getting around due to an accident. Bailey's wife, Vanessa, says the German Shepherd, Abel, wakes up her husband from his nightmares by licking his hand gently, but the dog needs further training to be a full-fledged service dog.
The Bailey's are working hard to enroll Abel in a training school, but can't afford the $6,000 cost. That's when 8-year-old Rachel Mennett heard about the Bailey's dilemma and wanted to help the strangers raise their funds. “I wanted to help him because my brother knew he needed help, and I wanted to do lemonade so I thought I could help him do it,” said Rachel.
