Zoo babies have really been bringing the cuteness lately. From a tiny jaguar cub taking his first steps to this endangered clouded leopard kitten getting his first bottle, it's difficult to resist these adorable baby animals.
The latest baby to make its public debut is a three-month-old polar bear at a Japanese zoo in the Hokkaido district. This little cub wasn't exactly ready for the close-up as he sticks close to Mom for safety. Hiding between her paws, the bashful baby quickly set the internet on fire with its cuteness. After a little bit, the baby warmed up to spectators and played around in the snow before cuddling up to mom for a nap. How sweet!
Visitors at the zoo will get their first peek at the cub in the enclosure on Wednesday. The cub, who was born December 21, 2014 at the zoo, is about 28 inches long and weighs about 33 pounds. Caretakers have not yet disclosed the gender of the cub.
The cub's birth has been a major cause for celebration, signifying a milestone accomplishment in the zoo's conservation programs. According to the National Wildlife Federation, polar bears are in serious danger of going extinct due to global warming. Polar bears are at the top of the food chain and have an important role in the overall health of the marine environment. The zoo's efforts will help facilitate research efforts that contribute to the survival of polar bears in the wild.
