Sign #1: Trouble Sleeping
Plenty of people suffer from insomnia now and then, but chronic sleeping troubles may be a sign that your loved one is experiencing depression.
According to Dr. Norman Rosenthal, "This may take the form of trouble falling asleep, or waking up during the night or the early hours of the morning. You may find your loved one in another room, trying to while away the time."
Sign #2: Changes In Diet
Loss of appetite or a sudden increase in appetite may indicate that your loved one is suffering from depression.
Helpguide.org suggests that you watch for "significant weight loss or weight gain — a change of more than 5 percent of body weight in a month."
Sign #3: Constant Aches And Pains
You may just think of your loved one as a "complainer," but constant complaints about health issues may show that they are depressed.
According to WebMD, a loved one with depression may report "persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment."
Sign #4: Persistent Negativity
No one likes to hang out with a "Negative Nancy," but this negativity and pessimism may actually be a sign that something much deeper is going on.
Filtercopy.com writes, "We're all irked by those people around us who keep on bickering incessantly, and almost always hold negative or demotivating opinions on everything. This is most probably a sign that they are dealing with a bigger problem, and unfortunately, are not even aware of it."
Sign #5: Withdrawal Or Loss Of Interest
Someone who seems to be disinterested in interaction with other people or with activities they used to love may be displaying signs of depression.
According to Helpguide.org, a person with depression may no longer take interest in "former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex."
They may seem like they've lost their "ability to feel joy and pleasure."
Sign #6: Neglected Appearance Or Poor Hygiene
An easy way to spot depression is if your loved one seems to have altogether given up on maintaining their appearance.
In fact, even the National Health Service of England lists "neglected appearance" and "poor hygiene" as sure signs of depression.
Sign #7: Reckless Behavior
One of the most troublesome signs of depression is a person engaging in reckless behavior.
Helpguide.org lists a few of the many forms this behavior can take: "substance abuse, compulsive gambling, reckless driving, or dangerous sports."
What Can I Do About It?
The Mayo Clinic writes, "Here's what you can do to help:
- Talk to the person
- Explain that depression is a medical condition
- Suggest seeking help from a professional
- Offer to help prepare a list of questions [for their doctor]
- Express your willingness to help”
And if you at all suspect that your loved one’s depression may be in any way life-threatening, it is vitally important that you call for emergency medical assistance right away.
