Mom Beats Cancer And Shares Story To Encourage Others To Get Checked Out

Kristen Keeney is a mother of two and is also an oncology nurse. A few years ago, she noticed a red patch on her eyebrow. It was small, itchy, and it would flake every now and again. The red patch would appear and disappear. Keeney didn't think much of it. But when she went to the doctors, they determined it was precancerous.

She ignored it for years. Then, she noticed more spots on her face. After five years, suddenly a red spot appeared on her cheek. Finally, Keeney couldn't ignore it any longer.

“I had three biopsies done after the birth of my first son, and they came back positive. I didn’t deal with them right away, and then, I got some more spots,” Keeney told CBS.

Over the course of her procrastinating, the mother got six spots, each a tumor of basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer. Although Keeney works with cancer patients every day as a nurse, she couldn't bear the thought of getting treatment. Each tumor required surgical reconstruction. While Keeney is now steadily beating the cancer, she is sharing her story to encourage those who live in fear of their diagnosis to face conditions head-on. The sooner you get treatment, the less painful of a process it will be.

“I think that a positive attitude plays a big role in a healthy healing process. I make a choice every day that when I’m putting my makeup on or getting ready that I see these scars as my road map,” she said.
