Second-grader Kendra May was performing on stage during a music program this past Thursday, March 2, at Gardner Elementary School in Kansas. The theme of the performance was family, and the people who make a difference in students' lives.
For May, that included her parents: mom, Tiffany, and her dad, Sergeant Dallas May of the U.S. Army.
Unfortunately, Kendra hadn't seen her dad in nearly a year, as the soldier was deployed overseas in Korea, serving his country.
Unbeknownst to her, though, Sergeant May had arrived back home earlier that day, greeted at the airport by his wife and son, Kendra's 3-year-old brother Jackson, whose birth Dallas had missed due to being away on duty.
So, naturally, he wanted to surprise his daughter with his early homecoming.
As she performed on stage, she had no idea that her dad was actually hidden in the audience, hanging onto her every word.
But then, after the performance was over, her music teacher dropped a shocker.
"We have a parent tonight who has come a long, long way to pick up his child. Sergeant Dallas May is here to pick up his daughter Kendra."
Instantly, the little girl came running off the stage to greet her father in a huge embrace.
"When I got a hug from her, it was really emotional. It’s good to be home though. I’m glad to be home,” Sergeant May said.
