Friends took Delaware County wife Kathy Powers out for lunch. What Kathy didn't know was that she was part of an elaborate scheme.
Her husband, Mike Powers, is an Army Reserve sergeant first class who had been away for 14 months in Kuwait.
Returning from his sixth deployment, Mike decided to surprise his wife, who was perusing a menu at Parrot Steakhouse and Grill.
He tiptoed behind her and then crept into her field of vision. When Kathy caught her first glimpse of Mike, she turned tomato red. Then she broke down into tears.
“What are you doing here? How did you get here? I can’t believe you’re here!” Kathy said.
The 58-year-old soldier had been discharged months early. He first served in the Marines from 1976 to 1984, when he was deployed to Japan, Iceland, and the Philippines. In 2003, he decided to enlist in the Army instead of the Marines, serving 10 months in Iraq in 2008.
“Do not to take living in America for granted,” he said. “Living in Kuwait makes you appreciate what we have. God bless America.”
