Retired Firefighter Sees Bird Splashing In Lake, Realizes It’s A Bald Eagle Desperate For Help

Retired firefighter and owner of a Texas construction company, Steve Oram, was out for a day of fishing, when he made a discovery that no American wants to make.

He saw some splashing in the water and figured it was just a bird native to the Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Then, as his eyes focused on the water, he saw that a different kind of bird was in trouble.

In the video below, posted on February 16, 2017, Steve explains, "Once I got up on it, I realized it was not a pelican. it was an American bald eagle. Then, I saw the trotline that was tied to a tree limb, and he was entangled in it."

In disbelief, he whipped out his phone and took a few pictures. Then, after putting his cell phone down, he began speaking to the struggling bird. He recalls his words, saying, "I know you're probably going to tear me up a little bit, just don't kill me. So, we're going to make this real quick."

He layed stomach down towards the end of his fishing boat and devised a plan.

He states, "He was scared, I was scared, and I figured out I could grab the cord and hold it up above my head and get him turned upside down so I could get the bad end of him away from me while I went in and untangled the cord around him."

He assumed that the the bald eagle was trying to catch a catfish he saw in the water and that was when he got stuck in the cord.

After a few minutes of rest, the eagle took off in a swift breast stroke to the other side of the lake.

Thanks to all of Steve's help, the bald eagle will continue to fly another day. To see Steve's footage of the patriotic bird, check out the video below.
