When Angela Windt's water broke at home two weeks before her due date, she knew that she wasn't going to make it to the hospital.
Her husband called for an ambulance, and members of the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad promptly arrived at the couple's home. There was only one issue: None of the volunteers had ever delivered a baby before!
Intent on delivering a newborn safely into the world, the EMTs surrounded the mom in labor. But it was 18-year-old EMT volunteer Nicole Segalini who positioned herself to catch the baby girl as she came out. Nicole was able to carefully take the baby's head and help the mother bring her into the world.
The teen had only completed her training a few weeks earlier and was thrilled to be able to assist in such a crucial moment. The high school senior hopes to one day become a surgeon. This will surely be a memorable experience she'll take with her to college!
Nicole remembers getting home very late and explaining to her father the crazy reason why.
Baby Ava is now at home with her parents and older sister, Alexa. Inside the house, in the parents' bedroom, there is still blue tape outlining the area where Angela gave birth.
