Jamie Salazar doesn’t speak and rarely shows emotion as a result of her autism. But that changed the minute the New Mexico girl laid eyes on a pit bull named Malcolm.
“My heart just melted because to see that she was able to open up that quickly to him, I knew there was an instant bond between them,” her mother, Ivy Salazar, told KRQE.
The first time Jamie saw the dog at the Animal Humane shelter, her whole demeanor changed. The 4-year-old, who is usually wary of animals at first, rushed to touch Malcolm. She even laughed, something the young girl doesn’t do often.
“It will take her a few hours at the least to warm up to any kind of pet. She doesn’t like the touch, the feel, the smell anything at all,” her mother explained.
We've seen the unbelievable bond between dogs and children with autism several times before, including the memorable 9-year-old who believes his service animal will change his life. That's what the Salazar family hopes for little Jamie as well.
As her mom said, Jamie and Malcolm must have been meant to be in each other's lives.
“I’m going to cry,” she also said. “I can’t even explain how it happened.”
