She Looks Like A 1950s Housewife, But When The Camera Pans Back? UNBELIEVABLE!

Meet the 'Time Warp Wives,' who believe that life, love, and marriage were better in the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. These are women who escape the modern world by retreating to their retro-inspired homes, where life is happy and less hectic.

Three of these Wives — each living in their own decade — allowed cameras into their homes. The results are both fascinating and nostalgic.

Joanne is a housewife who lives in a recreation of a 1950s home. She bakes cakes for her husband in an original 'English Rose' kitchen, complete with an original Kenwood Mixer, bright pink Bakelite phone, and authentic '50s crockery. Her clothing is also 1950s all the way — tight pencil skirts, white blouses and wide belts. Her obsession with the '50s began as a teenager, when she watched old movies in which women were more feminine and men more protective.

Debbie and her husband have made their home a shrine to the 1940s. Other people laugh at them, but they don't care. Debbie says this lifestyle makes her feel "as if I’m living in one of those old-fashioned TV shows where everything is always wonderful." She believes that, in modern-day society, innocence is lost and women are over-sexualized. To her, women should be more like her role model, Ava Gardner.

Diane's love for the 1930s started with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. In the '30s, she says women were glamorous, with their perfect hair and makeup, and were treated with such respect by men. Her wardrobe is full of cloche hats and Mary-Jane shoes with T-bar straps. She rarely reads newspapers, because she finds today's world depressing. Rude comments from strangers are nothing new, but as she says, people don't like anything that's out of the ordinary. In an ironic twist, however, Diane spends hours on the internet sourcing items for her 1930s lifestyle.
