We all have our dreams. Some dream of becoming a renowned chef, others long to meet their estranged relatives.
Bruce Porter pined for a more simple life. He wanted to live in a tiny house on a remote island. His desire led to the purchase of a small plot of land off the coast of Maine on Ragged Island. He spent the next 30 years dreaming of the home he would someday build there. Over the years, he constructed various structures in his head but, alas, they were all dreams.
Then his daughter Alex Scott Porter grew up…and decided to become an architect.
She took her dad’s dream and flipped it into a reality by helping him build a beautiful 550-square-foot house worthy of the Tiny House Movement. The sanguine sanctuary offers a lot for a small space including airy interiors, smart energy resolutions, and knockout views of the ocean…
This Maine hideaway isn’t just elegant, it’s also ingeniously engineered.

Ragged Island is remote and doesn’t have electricity. In lieu of gas or a diesel generator, power comes from a solar panel system attached to the roof of the porch.

The roof also feeds water into a collection tank that’s used with propane to heat and power the kitchen area.

There's also a special refrigerator that was originally designed to keep medical supplies cold in isolated places like sub-Saharan Africa.

In order to protect the small cabin from harsh weather, panels slide over the windows like hurricane shutters.

This view may be stunning, but those ocean waters can be quite devastating during a storm.

The home also boasts locally sourced materials like cattle fencing for the loft fence and plumbing pipe for the railing.

High ceilings make the small structure seem spacious.

The interior walls are made up of diagonally arranged white pine boards.

Tons of natural light from the windows makes the interior feel airy rather than stuffy.

A small wood stove keeps the cabin toasty and warm when the temperature plummets.

There’s no place like home!
