One year after Tracy Morgan was seriously injured in a car crash, he emotionally made his first television appearance on Monday and said he plans to make a comeback when he's ready.
“I can’t wait to get back to [comedy] but right now my goal is just to heal and get better because I’m not 100 percent yet,” he said on the TODAY show. “And when I’m there, you’ll know it. I’ll get back to making you laugh, I promise you.”
During the interview, the 30 Rock star also focused on his good friend, comedian James "Jimmy Mack" McNair, who was killed in the accident.
"The case is settled, but the pain is always going to be there for Jimmy Mack," Morgan said while tearing up. “He was a good man and it hurts me to see that he’s gone. … Bones heal, but the loss of my friend will never heal."
On June 7, 2014, Morgan and his friends were returning from a comedy show when a Walmart truck hit their limousine on the New Jersey Turnpike. Two other passengers were injured along with Morgan, who suffered broken ribs, a broken leg, and brain trauma.
“There are times I have headaches and nosebleeds,” he said. “I have my good days and my bad days.”
The comedian, who thanked Walmart for taking full responsibility and all those who have been there through his recovery, also appeared grateful.
"I can't believe I'm in front of you," he said. "I can't believe I'm just here, and just seeing the tragedy that happened. It kind of touches me."
