Every wedding comes with its own unique set of traditions depending on the happy couple. While there are some customs that you can always count on to be pretty much the same from ceremony to ceremony, like exchanging rings and saying vows, many cultures vary when it comes to time to start the party. For newlyweds of Māori heritage, a traditional haka performance can make the event all the more memorable. Others of Irish lineage might like to welcome their marriage with a round of step dancing.
I remember being baffled by something my brother called the "money dance" while I helped him and his wife plan their nuptials. Apparently the idea of paying a little cash to dance with the bride or groom is something common at receptions that I had simply never heard of! And I know my brother appreciated the spending dough while they were out on their honeymoon.
This couple embraced their Mexican roots with a hilarious take on a time-honored dance. After playing the "La víbora de la mar," lining the guests up to pass under the bride's veil, and giving the groom a good toss through the air, they dress him up in an apron to be "hen pecked" by his new wife. The bride playfully holds a belt and lightheartedly swats at him in a silly twist of the more stereotypical household roles. Everyone has a blast as they dance in circles around them. I would love to see this at every wedding!
