She Transformed A Banged-Up Doorknob Into A Rustic Towel Hanger — The Perfect $6 Upcycle!

I am always willing to tackle a new DIY upcycle project to upgrade my house.

Using my tools to turn old, useless objects into awesome additions to my home is one of my favorite activities. I love taking junk I have laying around and repurposing it, like this old tire that was transformed into an ottoman. So when I saw how one woman was able to upcycle a banged-up door knob, I knew I had found my next DIY project.

I found this impressive upcycle undertaking on The House of Smiths, where Shelley Smith turns an old doorknob into a gorgeous towel hook for her bathroom. Using only a few tools and some paint, Shelley creates the perfect rustic upgrade to her home. And the best part? She found the used doorknob at a nearby thrift store for only fifty cents.

I am very excited to add a little upcycled flair to my bathroom — such a great DIY idea!

No stranger to the home improvement project, Shelley is always on the lookout for the perfect upcycle. She writes that a trip to the thrift store "is a weekly event for me. I usually find at least one thing that I can't pass up for a dollar or so."

"This last time I was there I found this SUPER cute, but kinda banged up door knob." Spending only 50 cents, Shelley started her project by covering the crystal knob in tape so it wouldn't get paint on it.

Shelley chose white spray paint (which only cost her 98 cents) because it would match in the bathroom. To add some rustic flair to it, Shelley "took some sandpaper to the edges, and then sprayed a final coat of clear gloss protective spray."

While her newly painted knob dried, Shelley had to remove the existing towel ring holder from the bathroom. She writes, "And THATS when I ran into problems..."

Unable to remove the bottom screw easily, Shelley eventually turned to her tools for help. "I was getting ANGRY, so I took this mini crow bar thingy, and a hammer... and chizzled that sucker off!"

Once the hook was loosened, Shelley was able to finally pry it free and get back to her project.

Shelley joked, "HEEEEEEELLLLOOOOO... Look at that HOLE! I think I can see my kitchen from here..."

Fearing that a tiny hook or nail wouldn't be sufficient to hold her new hanger in place, Shelley turned to Command picture hanging strips. "I buy a pack EVERY time I'm at the hardware store. They REALLY are the BEST!" They also have them online for less than $4.

Using the strips, Shelley applied her new doorknob to the bathroom wall, also being sure to cover the hole from the previous hook. She bragged that the strips make it easy to remove and reset if she makes a mistake.
