Patrice Counts is the principal at Tom Bean Elementary in Tom Bean, Texas. She had all her students gathered for an assembly one day, when she looked over to see the biggest surprise of her life walking through the door: her military son.
Patrice's son, U.S. Air Force soldier Travis Counts, had been away from his family for nearly six months. He was only able to communicate with them via FaceTime and social media platforms. The military son had spent enough time away to want to make a big impact upon his return.
When Travis was finally given leave, he decided to make a visit to the elementary school where his mother works — unannounced.
Patrice was standing in front of a large group of young students, speaking. All of a sudden, she heard strange clapping, cries, and screams coming from everyone facing her.
She was confused as to why they were reacting in this way. It was just an assembly after all. Then she looked over her shoulder in shock. She realized that Travis had planned a surprise homecoming behind her back.
"So I couldn't see the door and then all of a sudden, everybody started clapping and screaming, I turned around and there was my boy," Patrice explains in the video below, posted on February 3, 2017. "There was Travis."
Once the elementary school principal laid eyes on her dear military son, she completely lost it.
