It was a camping trip gone wrong, but it turned mother of three, Jessica Dicks into a hero. As soon as Dicks heard the tree cracking she knew things were about to go terribly wrong.
The mother dove for the tent as the 32-foot tree came crashing down. That was the last thing she remembers.
"I remember running for the tent and then that's it — blank," said Dicks. "Then the tree hit me, and it crushed me."
Dicks was put into a medically induced coma at the University of Alberta Hospital in Canada. The mother suffered a collapsed lung, broken ribs, and is paralyzed from the chest down. She will never walk again.
But for Dicks, the cost of her legs was worth saving her children for.
"I would rather be paralyzed than one of them be dead, or them be paralyzed," she said. "I'd rather sit in a wheelchair for the rest of my life and watch them grow up normally than be in the hospital with one of them."
Dicks' uncle is certain that the mother's heroic action saved at least one of her daughters' lives and has raised over $56,000 for the family.
"I think she's a hero. I really think she saved at least one or more of those little girls," he said.
