A puppy mill is a dog-breeding business specializing in selling large quantities of dogs for maximum profit. A puppy mill is more interested in money than the welfare of its dogs. The puppy mills will sell the puppies to pet shops, brokers, or directly to consumers, and usually there is no due diligence done to ensure they are breeding the animals responsibly.
Many puppies coming from puppy mills are hurt, sick, or have genetic defects, and it's difficult to tell if the animal's living conditions at a puppy mill are suitable for the animal unless you visit in person.
Florence Tate of Burlington, NC wanted a puppy. When she went to a breeder to find a new pet, she fell in love with an adorable Boston terrier — but she was mortified by the living conditions she saw. "The place where he was, I call it a hell hole because I don't know any other way to describe it. It was just filthy."
It was an angering, terrible situation, but Florence's discovery led to a miraculous recovery of 40 dogs, 75 other animals, and one sweet, loving Boston terrier named Tucker.

At this puppy mill in Gates County, NC, the conditions were so bad that many of the animals were starving. It was filthy and the animals lived in complete squalor.
This included a Boston terrier named Tucker. Tucker was locked in a cage with more dominant dogs and was on the brink of starvation. He was emaciated and covered in scars.
When Florence drove away from the mill, her husband told her not to get attached. They were worried he might not survive the night. But for Florence, it was love at first sight.
Fortunately, Tucker did not die. Instead, he's now in a loving forever home with Florence and he continues to thrive.
