The actor — known for his roles in Top Gun, Heat, and Batman Forever, to name just a few — was honest and candid with his responses. 1. He And Tom Cruise Never Had A Top Gun Rivalry

It has always been rumored that Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer didn't quite get along on the set of Top Gun, but Val ended those rumors once and for all during his Reddit AMA.

"[Tom Cruise] was a sweetheart," Val said. "We were all quite rowdy, me and all the real flyboys and the actors, so I actually felt a little sorry for him. We all had time to play and date the cute extras and zoom around San Diego in muscle cars, but Tom was always in some scene and never got to play with us."

2. He Was Rejected For The Lead Role In Full Metal Jacket

Even though he's scored lead roles in such films as Tombstone and The Doors, there is one movie that Val Kilmer still wishes he had been in.

When asked what role he didn't get that he wished he had, Val said he missed out on playing "the lead in Full Metal Jacket."

3. He Was Acquainted With Nelson Mandela

While he was filming The Ghost and the Darkness in Africa, Val "got to know Nelson Mandela." According to Val, the South African President was "a man with so much love, I weep easily just at the thought of his gentle gaze."

4. He Wants To Play An Onscreen Villain

Though he's best known for his portrayal of Batman in the 1995 film Batman Forever, Val admits that he'd love to play a supervillian.

"I'd love to be the bad guy," Val said. When asked which villain he'd like to play in the Spider-Man universe, he joked: "All of them."

5. He's A Big Fan Of Katharine Hepburn And Spencer Tracy Collaborations

"I loved all the Hepburn-Tracy films, believe it or not," Val told a fan who asked what his favorite movies were growing up. "[The movies had] such smart dialogue and such smart actors. [The movies had] such different styles and yet, you just watched every minute of it… so I reveal that I am a secret sop."

6. He Wants To Do Another Movie With His Son

In 2013, Val Kilmer had the chance to work with his son Jack in Gia Coppola's film Palo Alto.

Though he'd love to work with his son again on another project, Jack has other ideas. "He keeps turning me down!" Val laughed.

7. Marlon Brando Helped Him Through His Divorce

When asked what it was like to work with Marlon Brando in the 1996 film The Island of Dr. Moreau, Val said, "[It was the] dream of a lifetime. Even though he could be as cranky as an old witch, he had just had someone murdered in his house and I was getting divorced [and] he helped me enormously get through that."

8. He And Kevin Spacey Are Childhood Friends

"I have known Kevin since Sunday school in the San Fernando Valley in 1975," Val said about his lifelong friendship with fellow actor Kevin Spacey. Val and Kevin have watched each other evolve as actors and as people, and Val joked that "[Kevin] was sooooooooooo bad [at acting] it used to hurt my eyes… but boy did he work hard and [he] deserves all his awards."

As for any possible collaborations — "he and I have reconnected and I'm sure one day we will rip up Broadway and fulfill a childhood dream."

9. He Loves Pizza
