Richneck Elementary School teacher Abby Zwerner, 25, was attempting to retrieve a gun from her 6-year-old student when the child shot her on January 6, 2023. A mother of a student in the classroom at the time of the shooting has opened up about what actually happened.
Brittaney Gregory told the Washington Post, "She was going to confiscate it — and that’s when he shot."
Zwerner was shot around 2 p.m. on January 6. The young child who shot her has been apprehended and taken into police custody, though authorities have admitted they aren't sure how to move forward with the case.
It also remains unclear what took place before the child pulled out the weapon and fired it.
Gregory told the outlet that Zwerner is her child's favorite teacher, and that she often writes encouraging notes for her students.
Gregory adds that her son is struggling with what happened. As she says, "He normally sleeps in his own room but the night of the shooting he came into my room. He was talking in his sleep, saying we got to get out of here."
Zwerner is currently in stable but serious condition. There is more in the video below.
