It may have been quite a few years ago, but I know I passed high school biology. That said, up until seeing this video, I never could have told you how a shark was born (and they definitely didn’t cover it in Finding Nemo!).
In this incredible video, a man hatches the bamboo shark that he bought for his saltwater aquarium using nothing but a pair of kitchen scissors. He gently moves the shelled shark to the back of the shell before taking out the scissors and getting to work.
This is when the real action happens: He cuts into the eggshell with the scissors, and then – after a few more snips – the baby shark (which is called a pup) comes swimming out! And boy, does he swim! This little critter comes bolting out of the shell and swimming much faster than you would ever expect out of a newborn animal – I guess he had been saving up that energy for quite some time!
If you find this shark birth intriguing, you’ll probably want to check out this stingray giving birth to a pup. For a fascinating on land animal birth, this giraffe birthing her calf is incredible to watch.
