In 1989, Whitney Houston And Michael Jackson Honored Sammy Davis Jr.

For the next nine minutes, we're taking you back to 1989. Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson were at the height of their careers, their bright lights shining across the world of music and into the hearts and homes of millions. The two icons graced the stage to deliver musical tributes to one of their shared role models, Sammy Davis Jr.

For the TV broadcast event, Whitney and Michael, among other stars, honored Sammy Davis Jr. on his 60th birthday. Whitney sang her hit ballad "One Moment In Time," directly followed by Michael at 5:30, who sang "You Were There" — a song specially composed for Sammy and performed exclusively for the occasion. Seeing two of the greatest singers of all time, on the same stage on the same night, both showcasing such raw emotion and talent, is almost too surreal to believe.

It's now 26 years later, and all three of these legends are gone. Sammy Davis Jr. passed away in 1990; Michael Jackson in 2009; and Whitney Houston in 2012. It's videos like this one that not only serve to remind us how fleeting life can be, but also the true power of music.
